Yogyakarta to host wisdom toward world cultural forum

Jakarta - Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will host the World Conference on Culture, Education and Science (Wisdom) 2010 as a pilot project for the World Cultural Forum 2012, the univerty`s rector Sujarwadi said here Monday.

"We have prepared everything based on planning and coordination with the supporting partners of Wisdom 2010, either from universities or other related institutions," the rector said.

Wisdom 2010, which is fully supported by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, will be held from November 8 to 11, 2010, with the theme of World Conference on Culture, Education and Science.

Besides the conference, Dr Ann Dunham Soetoro and Prof. Dr. Mubyarto will seed Local Wisdom Inspiring Global Solutions to commemorate the two democracy-based economic figures.

"It is a discussion to appreciate the works of both populist economic figures," he said.
Ann Dunham Soetoro is President Barack Obama`s mother, while Mubyarto is a former economic fighter.

Wisdom 2010 will discuss several topics, including Managing Multiculturalism, Complexities and Contradictions, Education in a Global World, Continuity and Change, Managing the Environment, Learning from the Past, Reaching the Future, Technology and Socio-Cultural Change, Heritage Tourism and Creative Economy, Local Knowledge and Global Health.

The seminar will also feature Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi UN board member who achieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 and established the Grameen Bank.

Sudjarwadi said that Wisdom 2010 is aimed at exploring local wisdom in the world which is full of human life values to be correlated into its role of solving world problems.

"We are all sure that local wisdom has a great and strong potential to inspire various characters in solving world problems, which is eventually beneficial to improve the quality of life of people in the world," he said.

Wisdom 2010, which will be attended by 750 multidimensional people from 33 countries, has the support of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Environment, and 30 universities in Indonesia.

The Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik said the event will serve as a stepping stone to the world class cultural event, World Cultural Forum 2012.

"The international conference matches Indonesia`s cultural excellence with world recognition and needs to be promoted and developed," Jero Wacik said.

The minister believed that Wisdom 2010 can raise Indonesia`s confidence with its local wisdom well known to the international world.

Wisdom 2010 will not only be held at Gajah Mada University, because the participants will be invited to know and enjoy some cultural and historical places in Yogyakarta, such as Prambanan Temple, Ullen Sentalu Museum, Tembi House of Culture, Winotosastro Batik House and the Affandi Museum.
