Bandar Seri Begawan - Modern puppetry is an innovative and attractive way of conveying good, sound messages that contain moral values, said Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports during the first seminar on Asean Puppetry and Introductory Performance of Wayang Menak yesterday.
Datin Hjh Adina Othman in her welcoming speech said that relevant agencies, in particular those working with children and other vulnerable groups, should promote puppetry as a new medium of instruction to convery messages of noble and moral values.
"Modern puppetry exists although it is at a relatively young stage,"said Datin Hjh Adina adding that it was utilised in some agencies such as the Language Literature Bureau (DBP) and Radio Televisyen Brunei as a form of storytelling for children.
"It is a matter of great concern to us that some of our traditional forms of entertainment representing our cultural heritage is in danger of dying out,"she said on the negative impact of modern channels of entertainment eroding and diluting traditions.
"Such cultural heritage, apart from providing traditional forms of entertainment also possesses noble moral values," she added.
In the Bruneian context, an example of one such endangered tradition was Diang Dangan, a form of storytelling culture in Brunei.
"It is imperative that the community take the necessary steps to protect, promote and to conserve such intangible cultural heritage,"she said.
The acting minister also reiterated that the ministry is committed on safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage that was represented by performing arts, oral traditions, social practice and traditional craftsmanship.
"The ministry looks forward to working with all interested parties to promote arts and culture and to instil dynamism into our cultural heritage so that our culture lives,"she said.
Hj Abdul Hakim Hj Mohd Yassin, the Project Coordinator Asean Puppetry Association(APA) of the event, said that he was very pleased to learn that APA and the Sena Wangi (Indonesian National Wayang. Secretariat) were keen on introducing puppetry to Brunei, the only Asean nation without an association on puppetry.
"Today, they have succeeded in bringing one type of Wayang Menak which is not contradictory to our nation's ideology MIB (Malay Islamic Monarchy)," he said.
"I sincerely hope that we will have a clear and positive perception on puppetry, a perception which will pave the way to realising the formation of an association dedicated to the creation and development of puppetry in Brunei."
