Five countries to join Indonesia`s art summit

Jakarta - South Korea, Austria, the Netherlands, the United States and Indonesia would take part in the Art Summit 2010 to be staged here on October 4 to 24.

"This year there will be five countries participating in the 6th Art Summit Indonesia 2010 which is a three-yearly art event presenting contemporary art works," Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik said at a press conference here on Friday.

He said the event would again be held at the three noted art centers here namely Taman Ismail Marzuki, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta and Kumunitas Seni Salihara.

The art summit will be participated in by ten groups from the five countries. "Through this event we also wish to select mainly noted Indonesian art works for attractions in future events.

In the event South Korea plans to display its contemporary dance Hyun Ok Park for the festival opening which will be followed by "Pendro" and "Cudamani" traditional gamelan music performances, Grass Puppet Show by Slamet Gundono, art performance by Teater Satu from Lampung and gamelan music by Blacius Subono from Indonesia.

Other performances to be staged are a dacne by Leine Roebana from the Netherlands, Sekar Kliwon dance by Nanu Munajar from Indonesia, Talea Ensemble music from the US, Pierrot Lunaire music from Austria and a dance from Nan Jombang Dance Company from Indonesia.

"They have passed through a tight selection by an artistic board," he said.

The artistic board is chaired by Prof Rahayu Supanggah with members including arts figures Putu Wijaya, Arthur S Nalan, Deddy Luthan, Tom Ibnur, Amna Kusumo and Tony Prabowo.

The Art summit is a contemporary art festival designed as one of the media to improve appreciation on a variety of art properties.The event is always accompanied by seminars on art studies and researches.

"The Art Summit Indonesia 2010 is designed by combining art perspective, science and technology that keep developing," the minister said.

He said the success of the Art Summit since 1995 could become evidence of the capacity and determination of artists, culturalists, arts and culture institution partners from home and abroad in organizing an event that would promote the country`s reputation in the international forum.

The director general of films, arts and cultural values, Tjetjep Suparman, meanwhile said the festival was initially focussed on presenting the latest dance and music works but in its development it then also involves theatres.

Several world-class artists and groups will take part in the event such as Kazuo Ohno from Japan, Sardono W Kusumo and Slamet Abdul Sjukur from Indonesia, Urban Sax from France, Chandralekha from India, Alvin Lucier from the US, Bremen Tanztheater from Germany, Theo Lovindie from the Netherlands, Yukio-Waguri from Japan, El Warsha from Egypt, Stange Fruit Dance from Australia and Putu Wijaya from Indonesia.

Putu Wijaya who is an artistic team member for the event said the Art Summit is a cultural "lung" event which is very expensive and rare.

"The Art Summit is aimed at showing the best and latest performances which are rarely staged, This is very expensive," he said.

He said the event would be a cultural door for people from outside to see Indonesia and vice versa. (*)
