London - An Indonesian short movie entitled `Nemesis`, directed by a student of the Jakarta Art Institute (IKJ), earned a "best cinematography" award at the 9th Open St. Petersburg Film Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The director of the movie, William Chandra, was surprised and elated after his movie was declared the winner of the award, M Aji Surya, counsellor at the Indonesia Embassy to Moscow, said in a press statement to ANTARA Friday.
Namesis was chosen from among 6,000 movies directed by cinematography students from all over the world that were entered at the film festival.
Chandra was surprised when his movie reached the big 400 nominees and borrowed money from the Ford Foundation to attend the festival in Rusia.
"It was the first time for me to go abroad and luckily my movie won," Chandra said.
Entries at the 9th Film Festival were dominated by German productions which also received the most awards.
Namesis, a film with a 15-minute duration, is about the struggle of a woman named Joan to find justice.
It turns out that Joan, who was raped by Reno, the son of a famous lawyer, cannot get justice in a court of law.
Joan`s brother, eventually avenges Joan by killing all members of Reno`s family.
The film`s message is that when courts fail to administer justice , people continue to seek justice in a wrongful way which often leads to another misdeed. Chandra spent Rp 7 million to make the movie.
Most of the players were recruited from among Teater Koma players who were only paid with expressions of gratitude as were the film crew members, Chandra said.
The technical constraints in the making of the movie were the insufficient human resources and instruments, he said.
William Chandra said his win at the film festival had made him confident that Indonesians do have the ability to compete in global forums.
He hoped the relevant institutions and universities in Indonesia would keep supporting students to conduct experiments by providing equipment, funds and also relevant and up-to-date technology.(*)
