Sail Banda 2010 Needs Far-and-Wide Promotion

Jakarta - The upcoming international marine event of Sail Banda 2010 needs far-and-wide promotion through all existing technology and communication networks.

In an effort to make the event a success, Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu called on people across the province to disseminate true information about Maluku to support the international marine activity.

"Please make use of all existing technology and communication networks such as cellular phones, internet, facebook, twitter, and othersto spread true information about Sail Bandawhich is to be held in next July-August," Ralahalu said in Maluku's provincial capital of Ambon on Monday.

The governor also called on Maluku people, wherever they are, to learn and understand the specific objectives of Sail Banda 2010 in order to give true information about it to their family members, relatives, and friends.

By giving true and correct information about the real situation in the province, Ralahalu expressed optimism that the international marine event of Sail Banda would gain both domestic and international support.

"For me, the success of the upcoming Sail Banda event is also the success of all people in Maluku to lift up the image of the province in particular and Indonesian in general in the international eyes," Governor Ralahalu said.

Ralahalu's hope for the success of Sail Banda 2010 was nothing but to make Maluku more progress and more prosperous in the future.

Therefore, he called on the local people to promote the event far and wide because a small group of people with narrow mind and lack of understanding about Sail Banda 2010 has planned to stage a rally to pretest against that international event.

"If we were not in one accord to maintain the security in Maluku, then our efforts to promote the success of Sail Banda 2010 would be useless," Ralahalu said.

To be participated in by at least 250 international sailors from various countries, Sail Banda 2010 is expected by Governor Ralahalu toproceed successfully.

"Sail Banda 2010 is expected to attract both domestic and foreign tourists visiting Maluku and to revive the glory of tourism sector in the province," the governor said.

As a member of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's entourage during visits to Australia and Papua New Guinea on March 13-14, 2010,Governor Ralahalu is also expected to promote the upcoming international marine event in those two countries.

The governor had been asked to accompany President Yudhoyono during the latter's visits to Australia and Papua New Guineanext month, according to a Maluku provincial government spokesman.

"It will be an honor for Maluku and also an opportunity forGovernor Ralahalu to promote Maluku'spotentials in the neighboring country," Maluku provincial administration public relations chief Semmy Huwae said in Ambon recently.

Huwae saidRalahalu would during the visit alsoextend an official invitation to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to attend the international marine event of Sail Banda 2010 in Ambon.

President Yudhoyono and his entourage will visit Australia on March 13, 2010, and on the next day March 14, 2010, the head of state will continue to Papua New Guinea where Governor Ralahalu wouldalso hand an official invitation to the PNG prime minister to attendSail Banda.

Semmy Huwae said the president and central government stronglysupported the success of Sail Banda 2010, and therefore Governor Ralahalu and his deputy also called on all parties to support the success of the international marine event in Maluku later.

Meanwhile, Maluku province's Public Works Office is buildingfresh water facilities in Kisar island, Southwest Maluku (MBD) district, and Banda, Central Maluku, for participants of the upcoming Sail Banda event.

"Based on an instruction from Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu, we are now building clean water facilities in Kisar and Banda forparticipants of the upcoming Sail Banda 2010," Maluku Public Works Office spokesman Ismael Usemahu said in Ambon over the weekend.

Besides a water tank with a capacity of 3,500 liters to transport fresh water from village to village, a water reservoir is being built and several new wells are being dug in Kisar island to provide the local people, as well as Sail Banda participants with fresh water.

"The water tank is to beoperated by the MBD district administration to supply the local people with fresh water," Usemahu said, adding that a team would soon be sent to Banda in Central Maluku district to survey the water flow rate.

He said another alternative was to operate water tanks to supply fresh water facility forSail Banda participants both in Banda and in Kisar island.

Central Maluku district administration spokesman AR Sukur said the local administration wascoordinating with the Sail Banda committee to provide fresh water and fuel oil supply facilities in Banda.

The international marine event Sail Banda 2010 is intended to promote Maluku's marine potentials and to assure the international community that the province was nowabsolutely safe for tourists after being torn by a communal conflict from 1999 to 2002.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who is due to attend the peak event of the marine activity on August 3, 2010 would at the same time declare Maluku as a national fishery hub.

With vast areas of coral reefs, Maluku is rich in fish and other sea biota, including decorative fish species, and if managed optimally and effectively, its marine resources could bring high economic returns.

Fish species found in Maluku waters include the Black spotted Puffer, Trumpet fish, Anemones, Juvenile Damselfish, Porcupine fish, Ornate Ghost Pipefish, Scorpion Fish, Lizard fish, Moray Eels, Seahorses and Banded Sea Snakes.

To support the Sail Banda 2010, the runway of Purpura Airport in Pulau Kisar, Southwest Maluku (MBD) district, also needs to be expanded.

Pulau Kisar is a small, remote island of the southern part of Maluku Province in eastern Indonesia. It lies just off the northeast coast of Timor-Leste, and although traditionally very hard to get to, it now has a small airport, called Purpura and located on the northern tip of the small island.

Purpura airport in Pulau Kisar receives flights from Maluku's provincial capitalof Ambon and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)'s provincial capital of Kupang.

Flights go Mondays and Fridays from Ambon (1 hour, 45 minutes) with Merpati Nusantara Airlines. Passenger ships also call at Pulau Kisar's Nama and Jawalan ports from Ambon, Kupang and Surabaya. (Otniel Tamindael)
