107 Parangtritis beach visitors killed

Bantul - A total of 107 visitors had been killed in sea accidents at the Parangtritis beach, Bantul regency, Yogyakarta Special District (DIY), in the 1991-2009 period.

"According to our data, in a period of 18 years there were 339 sea accidents in which 107 holidayers were killed, 38 of their bodies recovered, 47 missing, and 425 victims survived," SAR Beach Team Secretary Taufiq M said Wednesday.

He said that the high accident rate followed the increasing popularity of the south coast tourist destination following improvement and expansion of the area by the Bantul regency administration in the last few years.

However, the increasing number of visitors, was also followed by the increasing number of tourists ignoring the many beach warning signs set up by the SAR team and the Bantul administration like warning not to take a swim in the sea.

Taufiq said that the lack and limited means and equipment of the Parangtritis Beach SAR team contributed to fact that sea accidents could not be dealt with quick enough.
"There are only two patrol cars left, not to mention that about 50% of the floats and buoys can no longer be used," he said.

In addition, he said, loudspeakers to warn people not to swim in the sea with a radius of 300 meters have now become useless. (*)
