Timika, Papua - Mimika`s legislative council has proposed that the local administration purchase a helicopter to facilitate officials who serve people living in rural areas, a local legislative member has said.
"I propose that the Mimika district administration purchase a helicopter so that the health and educational services in the rural areas will run unhampered," a member of the Mimika district legislative council`s Commission C, M.Nurman Karupukaro, said here Monday.
According to him, the presence of a helicopter will help overcome the transportation problem faced to reach Mimika`s remote areas.
A number of villages in highlands like those in Jila and Tembagapura districts can only be reached by a helicopter due to lack of road and airstrip which can be landed by aircraft, Nurman noted.
He said because of the condition teachers and paramedics spent much time in Timika city instead of in Mimika`s rural villages to carry out their duties.
"Those conditions are very troublesome for the people and officials who served in the areas. No wonder the teachers and paramedics are reluctant to and often be absent from doing their jobs because of transportation difficulties," Nurman said.
Nurman`s proposal was supported by another legislative member Wilhelmus Pigai.
Pigai urged Mimika district`s administration to immediately discuss efforts to jointly overcome the transportation difficulties in rural areas with the Mimika legislative
council.
In 2008 Mimika district`s administration purchased an airplane from Pilatus company in Zurich, Switzerland, for serving rural people.
The aircraft named Mimika Air which had been in operation for only five months then crashed in Puncak district, Papua, due to bad weather. All crew members and passengers died in the accident.(*)
