Jakarta - The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah has given his consent for the silver jubilee celebrations marking his 25th year on the throne to be held on Feb 3.
The office of the Sultan of Perak said in a statement to Bernama that the Sultan, who is concerned about the current economic situation, wanted the celebrations to be held on a modest scale.
"The celebration will focus on programmes to show gratitude to the Almighty; the importance of education and the pursuit of knowledge; the Sultan`s close rapport with the people; appreciation to individuals who have contributed significantly and served the Sultan with loyalty; appreciation for the spirit of cordial relations between the Rulers, the various Yang Dipertua Negeri and the federal government leadership; and appreciation for the sacrifice and loyalty of the members of the country`s security forces to the Ruler and country," said the statement.
The programmes which had been consented by the Sultan were a thanksgiving and `tahlil` session at the Ubudiah Mosque, Kuala Kangsar on Feb 2 and a ceremonial guard of honour at the Istana Iskandariah grounds on Feb 3.
An investiture to confer a special award, the Darjah Dato` Seri Azlanii (D.S.A.), to 25 recipients and the reading of the loyalty speech would also be held at the Throne Room of the Istana Iskandariah on Feb 3.
In the afternoon, the launching of postage stamps commemorating the Silver Jubilee and a stamp exhibition will be held at the Ipoh Town Hall.
On Feb 10, the Sultan will attend a Programme With the People at the Arena Square, Batu Gajah where he was born and had his early education.
Sultan Azlan will also attend the Prize Giving Day of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), his alma mater.
A Royal Banquet will also be held at the Banquet Hall, Istana Iskandariah in the evening on Feb 14, followed by a Royal Mess Night for members of the uniformed units at the Dewan Khatulistiwa, Wisma Samudera, Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Base, Lumut on Feb 21.
The statement said that expenses for the thanksgiving session, investiture, Royal Banquet and the Royal Mess Night would be borne by the Royal family as the Sultan did not want to burden the government financially.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Nur Zahirah, the Malay Rulers, the Yang DiPertua Negeri of the various states and the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam have been invited to attend the Royal Banquet.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were also invited.
Sultan Azlan Shah, who ascended the throne on Feb 3, 1984, is the 34th Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan and among four Sultans who have ruled the state for 25 years.
According to the history of the Perak Sultanate, Sultan Mansur Shah I, the second Sultan of Perak ruled for 28 years (1549-1577), Sultan Mahmud Iskandar Shah, the 11th Sultan of Perak ruled for 67 years (1653-1720) and Sultan Idris Murshidul `Adzam Shah I, the 29th Sultan of Perak ruled for 29 years (1887-1916).
The surau and houses of worship are encouraged to hold thanksgiving to the Almighty and Perak subjects are encouraged to raise the state flag, especially on Feb 3 and the federal and state flags on Feb 14 and 15 to show their love and loyalty to the Ruler.
