Monument Of Struggle Leaves Historical Reflection

Medan, N Sumatra - A Monument of Struggle must leave a historic reflection, and arouse the value of the dedication of the fallen heroes who had sacrificed themselves in the defence of Indonesian dependence.

An imaginary dialog is expected to appear showing heroic values to the people each time they look at the monument,” Military (TNI) Chief General Djoko Santoso said here Tuesday when dedicating the Monument built by the Indonesian Veterans Legion in North Sumatra. General Djoko said that a monument of struggle was not only a solid statue but it also established a contact with history.

He hoped the monument would arouse the people`s resoluteness to continue their heroes` struggle. As a great nation, the Indonesian people including North Sumatrans, must appreciate the services of their heroes who had sacrificed themselves, he said.

Meanwhile, Social Affairs Minister Bachtiar Chamsyah said that the monument in North Sumatra had a close link with Medan as a city of historical significance.

Chamsyah cited as an example North Sumatra`s struggle against the colonialists, known as the Medan Battle. The monument also indicated that Indonesian independence was achieved through fighting and sacrifice. “It was not a present from the colonialists, but we fought for it,” the minister said. (ant )
