Essay And Syair Competition Winners Honored

Bandar Seri Begawan - A price presentation ceremony was held yesterday at the Rizqun Hotel for the Syair (classical Malay poetry) and essay writing competition organized in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee Celebration of Brunei History Centre.

The prizes were presented by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Ahmad bin Haji Jumat.

The winner of the Syair competition was Awang Haji Kiflee bin Tarsat. Second place went to Awang Haji Masri bin Haji Idris and Awang Hidop bin Haji Mohammad Zin came third.

Meanwhile in the essay writing competition, there was no first place winner for Category `A` but the second place went to Awang Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Duraman and in third place was Awang Othman bin Haji Mat Don.

For category `Et` in the essay writing competition, the first place went to Abdul Syukri Ahmad bin Ibrahim, Dayang Nazurah binti Haji Mahli, second, and Dayang Patin Nur Majdina birth Hamdani, third.

The winners of the competition received cash prizes and certificates while other participants received certificates of participation.

Prior to the prize presentation, the chairman of the event, Dr Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong said the competition is hoped encourage more people to write about the country`s history. It is also hope to instil affection towards doing research and writing the history locally instead of depending on foreign writers. By Azrol Azmi
