RI, Vietnam to cooperate in marine and fisheries sectors

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, to attend the 17th ASEAN Summit is scheduled to meet with senior officials there to discuss possible bilateral cooperation in marine and fisheries sectors.

"I am scheduled to meet with Vietnam`s president, the prime minister and the chairman of the house of representatives to discuss cooperation in marine and fisheries sectors," President Yudhoyono stated in a press release received here on Monday.

The president expressed hope that the new cooperation would help solve illegal fishing operations by both Indonesian and Vietnamese fishermen in the border area.

Cooperation in defense would also be discussed during the president`s meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart. The cooperation was considered important since Indonesia and Vietnam shared a border in the South China Sea.

Earlier, presidential spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said President Yudhoyono at the ASEAN Summit in Hanoi would present Indonesia`s vision and mission as the ASEAN chair next year.

President Yudhoyono, according to Faizasyah, would use the opportunity to fight for the interests of the country and ASEAN including the realization of the ASEAN Community through progress and concrete steps in the three pillars, namely ASEAN Political and Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community, and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.

The activities during the summit include ASEAN Leaders Retreat, the ASEAN Summit and a summit with counterparts from partners (China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand and Russia), the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Summit, the ASEAN +3 Summit, the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN-UN Summit.

Discussions in the agenda cover efforts to achieve ASEAN Community in 2015, ASEAN Plus, regional architecture, ASEAN Connectivity and other regional as well as international issues. (*)
