Lovers of foreign films and outdoor music concerts are guaranteed to have a ball in Singapore this September, what with the Singapore Latin-American Film Festival and NAC-ExxonMobil’s Concert in the Park both kicking off in the first week of the month.
This year, Singapore has been given the honor of hosting the Asian leg of the Latin-American Film Festival, which brings together the best of contemporary Latin American cinema from Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Mexico.
Running from Sept. 1 to 7, 2010, at Golden Village, VivoCity, the festival will feature a selection of challenging and thought-provoking Spanish-language films subtitled in English.
The repertoire includes the biopic Miranda Regresa (Miranda Returns), which tells the story of Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda (pictured); Tocar y Luchar (To Play and to Fight), a captivating look into the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System; and Caribe (Caribbean), a steamy drama of politics, passion and environmentalism set in Costa Rica.
Viewers intent on learning more about the era of conquistadors can tune in to El Bien Esquivo (The Elusive Good), a historical drama about the son of an Inca princess who seeks to refute his alleged Spanish heritage. Directed by Peruvian auteur Augusto Tamayo San Román, the film captures the essence of Lima as the main city of the 17th-century South America.
Screen time and ticket sales for these and other movies can be checked on www.facebook.com/SGLAFF
Moving on to music offerings in Singapore this week, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (pictured) invites parents and their children to see "Concerts for the Children: The Mozart Experience", taking place at the Esplanade Concert Hall on Sept. 4.
The chamber orchestra program, organized in collaboration with Magic Circle Mime Company, tells the story of a mischievous street musician finding herself thrust into the role of Mozart.
Showing at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the concert is conducted by Darrell Ang to highlight Mozart’s life as a musical, human adventure filled with opportunities and dilemmas. Tickets can be bought from www.esplanade.com.
Next up, the tranquil and idyllic surroundings of Pasir Ris Park in northeast Singapore will be rocked to the core during the NAC-ExxonMobil Concert in the Park on Sept. 5!
This series of free outdoor concerts returns with a fresh wave of performances to the heartland, refreshingly blending various musical traditions from around the world.
The contemporary-fusion group Gamma:rays, for example, is “sure to transform your perspective of the sounds of ancient gamelan” with pulsating and hypnotic rhythms of gamelan infused with jazz, pop and rock elements.
An opening act from award-winning Bedok View Secondary School Angklung Ensemble is to be followed by an audio journey with internationally renowned Orkestar Trio, which features various musical styles from the Malay Archipelago.
Later, tune in to cousins Krsna, Govin, Denise and Dexter as they bring an eclectic concoction bearing elements from Indian, Chinese and Western beginnings to the audience.
While the concert plays in the park, visitors can also join Arts InFusion for some exciting fringe activities like grabbing a balloon sculpture or getting their caricatures drawn by expert artists.
The event begins at 4 p.m. at Pasir Ris Park. Check out www.nac.gov.sg or concertinthepark.blogspot.com for details, and see you there! (Andrea Tejokusumo)
