Yogyakarta - A dragon-shaped lantern said to be the longest ever made in Asia will lustre up a Chinese Festival to be held here on February 23-27.
"The lantern was made by members of the Chinese community living in Yogyakarta," chairman of the festival`s organizing committee, Tri Kirana Muslidatun, said here on Monday.
The dragon-like lantern was made from a 126-meter-long piece of parachute fabric and hold 1,300 lamps and 40 batteries. Weighing around 2.6 tons, the lantern would be carried by 300 people.
The Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) has also acknowledged the lantern as the longest one ever made in Indonesia.
The Yogyakarta Chinese festival, held for the fifth time, would also present a dance performance by Indonesian artist Didik Nini Thowok titled "Jathilan Ampyang," a food bazaar, Chinese cultural exhibition and a Mandarin speech-making contest.
"The festival will be ended by a fireworks show at 21.00," he said.
Centered at Ketandan, the oldest Chinatown area in Yogyakarta, province, the festival aims to support Yogyakarta`s efforts to present itself as cultural tourism city. (*)
