Ambon, Maluku - To be highlighted with a series of international seminars, the international marine event of Sail Banda 2010 is expected to yield an Ambon Declaration.
Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu said here on Saturday that the event was expected to produce an Ambon Declaration to save the province`s small islands which are under threat of disappearance.
"We hope the Ambon Declaration will be made through a series of international seminars as part of the Sail Banda event," Governor Ralahalu said.
According to the governor, noted world researchers would be invited to participate in the seminars whose outcome would be contributed to the state and nation, as well as international world.
"The result of the international seminars will be useful for the state and nation, as well as international world to save the small islands from disappearance in the future," the governor said.
At least 2,000 small islands in Indonesia are feared to disappear as the result of global warming, and therefore various efforts and programs have to be made to save those islands.
Governor Ralahalu also said Sail Banda 2010 would be of great advantage to the people of Maluku.
"This international marine event will give an immense contribution to various social aspects of the people of Maluku and Indonesia in general," Ralahalu said.
According to the governor, the international marine event would be a stepping stone to accelerate the pace of social and economic development in the province.
"The acceleration of development in Maluku is laid down in the regional midterm development plan 2011-2013 to build a prosperous, harmonious, religious, and self-reliant province," Governor Ralahalu said.
He said domestic and foreign tourists from various countries, as well as the participants of Sail Banda 2010 would contribute to a short term economic advantage for the people in the province.
While the long term advantage of the international marine event, according to the governor, was the promotion of the potential natural resources and tourism sector in Maluku to investors from various countries.
"A successful Sail Banda would convince the international community that the once communal-war-torn province is now perfectly safe and peaceful for both domestic and foreign tourists," Ralahalu said.(*)
