Arthur’s Day and Pudu

A series of events immediately kicked off right after Idul Fitri in Malaysia, including some of the most important programs in the country’s art calendar. Two of these events are the Pudu Community Art Project and Arthur’s Day.

History speaks of a village that has existed for the past 120 years, occupied by early Chinese settlers who were involved in the tin mining industry and other local trades. Pudu Village was a base for the Chinese community from the very start. Even now, the area is largely populated by the Chinese community with an increasing number of foreign workers.

Located right next to the robust, highly commercialized Bukit Bintang, Pudu has remained relatively unchanged in the last 50 years, undoubtedly becoming one of the most significant historical places in Kuala Lumpur.

Due to the rapid development in KL, a few of the significant landmarks in Pudu have since been demolished, namely the five cinemas and the railway station. This is where the community art project should fill the gap, attempting to rediscover the significant cultural value of Pudu via a series of community-based arts and cultural programs to eventually build the groundwork for communal bonding among the locals.

Pudu Community Art Project gathers various artists from dancers to painters within the area of Pudu to share their talents in a month long series of exhibitions and events, ranging from theater performances, cultural tours, installation arts, lectures by renowned historians, classic movie screening, art markets and an art festival named Moon Walk Pudu Art Festival from Sept. 11.

The entire program will be held in the vicinity of the former Pudu Jail, on Jalan Hang Tuah, 55100 Kuala Lumpur until Sept. 25. For details about the project, including the schedule of events and locations, feel free to click on

The second event, Arthur’s Day, is a celebration held in the memory of Arthur Guinness, the man behind the famous black brew Guinness. He signed a 9,000-year lease on the St. James’ Gate brewery in Dublin in 1759, and it was his vision and passion that makes Guinness what it is today, the incomparable black brew enjoyed by 10 million people every day throughout the world.

And Arthur’s Day is more than just a toast; it’s a world wide toast starting in Dublin Ireland, the United States and the Caribbean. On Sept. 24, the toast will take place in KL, featuring two-time Grammy Award-winning rapper Timbaland, Sean Kingston, Flo Rida, Colby O’ Donis, Melissa Indot, Mizz Nina, Pop Shuvit, Thai Hip-Hop Thaitanium and DJ Fuzz.

Up to 15,000 fans turned up at Arthur’s Day celebration in Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach last year.

Taking place at the same venue this year, more people are expected to come to this year’s worldwide toast, with tickets priced at 350 ringgit (Mosh Pit), 198 ringgit (VIP), 98 ringgit (Regular).
