Hundreds of tourists, mostly from Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, will join a ceremony to commemorate the 100th day of the death of former president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, scheduled at the cemetery at Tebuireng Muslim boarding school in Jombang, East Java, on Thursday evening.
“Several travel bureaus have contacted us. The majority of tourists to come to Jombang will be from Malaysia and Brunei,” head of East Java Tourism and Culture Office Djoni Irianto said Tuesday.
Based on data from Juanda Airport in Surabaya, 250 Malaysians have arrived and gone directly to Jombang, Djoni said, predicting that more foreign tourists will continue coming until Wednesday.
“There will be hundreds of others from Malaysia and Brunei who will arrive by Wednesday,” he said as quoted by tempointerektif.com.
In order to help increase tourist arrivals, the local provincial administration has planned to renovate the cemetery where Gus Dur is buried into a religious tourism site, like those built to commemorate noted Muslim preachers such as Sunan Ampel in Surabaya, Sunan Bonang in Tuban, Sunan Giri and Maulana Malik Ibrahim in Gresik, and Sunan Drajat in Lamongan.
