Palembang, South Sumatra - The Blood Transfusion Unit of the Palembang branch of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) (UTD-PMI) has run out of blood stock for the fasting month.
Consequently, people whose family members get sick in hospital and are in need of blood are forced to wait in front of the blood bank counters for days to obtain pouch of blood for their ailing relative.
Palembang`UTD-PMI spokesman Tri said here on Tuesday the blood shortage in South Sumatra had happened during the fasting month.
"Unlike on normal days before the fasting month, the number of blood donors during the Ramadan holy month has dropped drastically and consequently we have run out of blood stock," Tri said.
He said most of the patients who need blood transfusion at the hospitals in Palembang wanted to have types A and AB blood but it was not available.
Rustam, a relative of a sick person, said he had been waiting to get type A blood for his ailing relative for one whole day but there was no donor with that type of blood.
