Komodo Threatened to be Disqualified from Seven Wonders Nomination List

Kupang - Komodo, the rare animal in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, could be disqualified from its New7Wonders nomination.

The problem is that the Indonesian government and East Nusa Tenggara Government have gathered support from several parties without the permission of New7Wonders Foundation as license holder of the new7wonders.

“Any support gathering initiatives must have permission from the New7Wonders Foundation,” said the Director of Marketing and Promotion from the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Esty Reko, in Kupang, Thursday (25/5).

According to him, he was reprimanded by the New7Wonders Foundation because he was cooperating with several parties to gather support for Komodo to become one of the new seven wonders of the world.

The support gathering, he said, violates the New7Wonders regulations so Komodo could be disqualified from the list if the reprimand is not noticed.

For example, Bank NTT have some advertisements in several newspapers in the area to support Komodo, even though the Bank does not have a permit.

Besides that, West Manggarai appeal, where Komodo National Park is located, must have permission from the New7Wonders Foundation.

New7Wonders Foundation, he said, will continue to monitor votes in several regions.

If there is a violation, Indonesia could get a reprimand and could be disqualified from the nomination list.

Right now, komodo is on the big 28 for the nomination of 2010 Seven Wonders of the World, 440 other sites in 220 countries.

Regional Secretary Assistant, Servasius Banggung, who accompanied Esty, asked various parties which gather support to follow regulations determined by the New7Wonders Foundation.

”We must follow existing rules, so as not to make mistakes,” he said. (YOHANES SEO)
