Kupang - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Frans Lebu Raya has called on all district chiefs and city mayors in the province to do everything they can to help get Komodo Island selected as one the "seven new wonders of the world."
Komodo Island was now in 14th place in the ratings but the world public`s assessment was fluctuating. Therefore , the government`s "Vote Komodo" campaign needed to be supported by all NTT administration officials and people, the head of NTT`s culture and tourism office, Frans Rihi, said here on Monday.
Rihi said to support the Vote Komodo campaign, his office had installed free internet connections at every entry point in East Nusa Tenggara such as airports, sea ports and other public spaces.
"We hope people are motivated to support the efforts to get the Komodo dragon (Varanus comodoensis) selected as one of the seven natural wonders of the world," said Rihi.
The New 7 Wonders Foundation announced on July 21, 2009 that Komodo Island had been named one of 28 finalists in the international selection process after besting more than 440 nominees from 220 countries.
"We will continue to run the `Vote Komodo` campaign until the voting closes on September 11, 2011," Rihi said.
Komodo Island was declared a National Park on March 6, 1980 at an official ceremony attended by then President Soeharto In 1986, Komodo National Park was designated as a Biosphere Reserve and in 1991 as a World Heritage Site.
Komodo National Park actually consists if there islands, namely Komodo (33,937 hectares), Rinca (19,625 hectares) and Padar (2,017 hectares). The park is located at an altitude of about 735 meters above sea level.(*)
