Johor Baru - Some 700 devotees offered prayers at the Tiong-Hua Enlightenment Ceremony in conjunction with the Hungry Ghost Festival at Xing Gong, Jalan Ulu Ayer Molek here.

Devotee Low Ham Mong, 67, said the ceremony was meaningful to her because it was a chance for her to present offerings to her ancestors.

“The younger generation should also participate in the Hungry Ghost Festival.

“I believe that such culture and tradition should be practised to prevent it from dying out,” said the mother of three.

Another devotee, Gan Hooi Huang, participated in the event with her family to give offerings to her father-in-law and mother-in-law.

“The praying ceremony was also a chance for us to bond as a family to wish for blessings in the following year.

“This was our first time participating in the event and I will continue doing so in the following years,” she said.

Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association president Lim Ik Ching said the ceremony was held on the seventh month of the Chinese calendar to hold prayer sessions to transcend departed spirits and to give offerings to the deceased.

“The main aim was to bestow blessings of prosperity, health and good fortunes upon participants and their family members.

“Other than prayers, joss paper food offerings are also made to pay homage to the devotee’s ancestors,” he said.
